On Wednesday, October 9,14 youth prepared a total of 225 bags in a backpack service project with United Way as a part of National 4-H Week to serve their peers who are food insecure.

Children are identified as food insecure in local Caldwell County schools by school counselors and can receive food to eat at home over the weekend through United Way’s backpack program. Packaged food items include chicken noodle soup, apple sauce and cereal. Items for the bags are chosen so that a child can prepare the meals for him or herself with little to no adult assistance.

The theme of this year’s National 4-H Week, October 6-12, is “Inspire Kids to Do.” Youth ages 5-18 are eligible to join 4-H.
