Watauga and Caldwell County FCS and Local Food Agent, Margie Mansure, recently received two state Extension awards that she’ll be using to pursue professional development in the culinary tradecrafts: the Charles M. Brickhouse Award and the Ada B. Dolla-Pozza Development Award. Each of these awards are awarded annually at the State Extension Conference, which was held virtually this year due to the pandemic.

Margie is focused on helping individuals improve choices that affect their health, such as healthy nutrition and adequate physical activity. In addition to providing education for people to make responsible personal choices, she works with community groups to help improve our local food economy while serving as the primary local food coordinator for Watauga County. She initiated the High Country Grown initiative to get more local foods into our restaurants.

Margie Mansure presents a High Country Grown Gold Level Certification to J.P. Mason and Lynne Mason of Lost Province Brewing Co.

Through her role as a Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent, Margie Mansure teaches community members good nutrition and health practices, and promotes the consumption of locally produced food through various approaches in Caldwell and Watauga Counties. From “Kids Can Cook!” classes for preschoolers all the way to cooking demonstrations at senior centers, she has taught practical skills through healthy food preparation across the lifespan. Over the last few months, she has recorded 17 instructional cooking videos that walk consumers through the preparation of healthy & hearty recipes.

The Charles M Brickhouse development scholarship is limited to NCCES personnel who have served for five or more years, and who intend to use the award as an opportunity to enhance professional competencies. The Dolla-Pozza Professional Development Award is presented to enhance the professional development of an outstanding Extension Family and Consumer Sciences career professional in North Carolina, who exhibits the ability to recognize concerns and needs of families and to involve people in planning and implementing educational programs that benefit clientele. Margie has enrolled in the culinary arts program at Caldwell Community College to refine her culinary and teaching skills, and will use these awards to continue her culinary education.
