Last week, when the Bridge Alliance, Big Tent Nation and the National Conference on Citizenship, leaders in the civic renewal movement, announced the finalists for the fourth annual American Civic Collaboration Awards, or “Civvys,” as they have come to be known, our own Kids Voting Durham was included in the Youth Category.

Kids Voting Durham is a non-partisan, youth-centered program that helps youth 18 and younger from across the county understand the power they have as engaged citizens and informed voters.

The Civvys are the only national awards program dedicated to celebrating projects that emphasize working together across divides to strengthen communities and empower citizens. By leveraging collaboration as a core strength, these initiatives put community and nation before party, ideology, and narrow interests, embodying a civic spirit that inspires other Americans to take action. This year, in addition to collaboration, impact, and scalability, award criteria included an emphasis on building a more diverse and equitable America.

From a record number of nominees, the Civvys Awards Committee announced 18 finalists, across three categories: National, Local, and Youth. Their work runs the gamut from new voter registration and education, to STEM education that feeds communities, to local civic commons and election innovations, to workforce development for underserved communities, to support for corporations ready to civically engage, to media projects highlighting our common ground, and many more. For a full list of finalists and nominees, visit the 2020 Civvys website.

We are so proud of the work of our Kids Voting Durham team and are honored to have received this recognition. To get involved with Kids Voting Durham, visit our website.
