Listed below is our plant variety information and planting tips so you can start preparing your gardens for your spring purchases!
Strawberry varieties are Chandler, Eversweet, and Ozark Beauty. All strawberries are bare root plants and come in a bundle of 25. Strawberries perform best at a pH of 6.5-6.8. They are normally easy to grow and can be grown in a matted row system.
Blackberry varieties are Triple Crown, Prime Ark, and Natchez. All blackberry varieties are thornless, bare root, and are upright. Blackberries tolerate most soils but do best at a pH of 6.5-6.8, as well. Remember, to have a good fruit set, they need to be planted in full sun.
Blueberry varieties are Powderblue, Climax, and Tifblue. These will come in a container and most plants will be 18-24in tall. Most people know blueberries like acidic soils (pH of 4.5-5.8), but they also need well-drained soils. Our native soils can provide the acidity, but they will need to be amended with organic matter to improve their drainage quality.
Muscadine varieties are Noble and Carlos. Both varieties are self-fertile, meaning you do not have to buy two different varieties to get a good fruit set. Muscadines are also considered easy to grow. It prefers a pH around 6.5, so liming may be appropriate when preparing your soils for muscadines. Be sure to plant them in an area that gets full sun. Word to the wise, go ahead and start thinking about how you are going to trellis your muscadines before it’s too late!
Rhubarb is available, as well. Rhubarb likes a pH of 6.0-6.8 in well-drained soil. This variety of rhubarb, Victoria, is known for its sweet taste and is perfect for rhubarb pie!
PawPaw trees will be available! The pawpaw tree is a native species of fruit. Producing large, tropical custard-like fruit that is oblong in shape and has a light green skin. Enjoy the pleasant aroma when it ripens. Texture is firm with a delicate blend of flavors. It will produce fruit after 5 years. Buying multiple trees is recommended.
Fig varieties are Celeste and Brown Turkey. Both varieties grow well here. Celeste is best for canning, while Brown Turkey can be eaten fresh or can be dried.
