Getting to know your woodlands: A primer for beginners

Join other woodland landowners through out the region to learn about how you can take better care of your woodlands. This is a regional Extension course being offered in 5 sessions.  The first four sessions are webinars hosted by your local Extension center on Thursdays from 7-9 PM from February 21, 2019 to March 14, 2019. 

February 21, 2019: 7-9 PM   Getting to know your Woodlands, learn how natural and human forests have shaped the forest in this region and the importance of this knowledge when developing management plans and practices on their forests.

February 28, 2019: 7-9 PM Managing your Woodlands, learn about the basics of pine and hardwood management with tips on managing for the future.

March 7, 2019: 7-9 PM  Identifying and Managing Woodland Threats, learn about forest health with emphasis on a few basic pest principles, model example of each threat, and some simple practices to help ensure your woodland remains healthy and productive.

March 14, 2019: 7-9 PM  Wildlife and Woodlands, learn about wildlife and your woodlands with a focus on wildlife habitat requirements and enhancing habitat for game and non-game wildlife.

An optional fifth session maybe offered by the local Extension center. To participate in this course contact one of the following Extension offices.

This one-day workshop is for growers new to pastured poultry, those considering adding poultry as an enterprise, or experienced growers looking for production tips.

We will meet at the NC Cooperative Extension- Caldwell County Center for the morning session and then travel to Rippetoe Farm and Isidore Farm near Lenoir in the afternoon. The workshop will cover various production topics including biosecurity, determining the type of operation you may want to have (species and type), breeds, health, molting, best management practices (BMP’s), budgets, marketing, processing, housing, feed/water, fencing, and predator control.

NC Safe Plates is a new Food Safety Manager Certification Course developed by NC State University and an alternative to ServSafe. This course will prepare food service managers to complete the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals Food Safety Manager Certification Examination. NC establishments must have at least one supervisor certified as a food protection manager through an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)- accredited program or face a two-point violation from the health department.
Managers will receive a certificate to display in their operation which will verify with local Environmental Health Departments that they are in compliance.

• Upcoming Class – Monday - Wednesday, May 13, 14, and 15, 2019 from 9:00am – 1:00pm. The two-hour exam will be on Thursday, May 16 from 9:00am – 11:30am. Please register and pay by Tuesday, April 30 at Caldwell County NC Cooperative Extension, 120 Hospital Avenue. NE, Suite 1, Lenoir, NC 28645. The cost of the class is $120.00 which covers the book, exam, handouts and refreshments.
