The Big Dreams Small Farms educational series kicks off March 19th from 9 am to 4pm at the Caldwell County Extension Center, 120 Hospital Ave. NE Suite 1, Lenoir NC. The first topic in this educational series is Cattle Production in North Carolina. Big Dreams Small Farms is a NC Farm School program aimed at helping new and future farmers understand various agricultural enterprises so they can be successful.
The first program on cattle production will cover topics inside the classroom. These topics are understanding cattle production systems, breed selection, infrastructure needs, animal care, marketing, and economics. After lunch, we will visit Hardrock Beef Cattle where farmer/owner Ronnie Holman will explain his cattle operation.
Ronnie Holman manages about 40 acres of pasture in Caldwell County and over 400 acres in Rutherford County. Hardrock Beef Cattle has earned many accolades and been recognized as the 2018 NC Cattlemen’s Environmental Stewardship Award Winner, 2014 NC Soil & Water Conservation District Farm Family of the Year, and 2013 Rutherford County Forage Farmer of the Year. This is an opportunity to have one full day dedicated to cattle considerations!
The Big Dreams, Small Farms Series also has day-long workshops on small ruminants, pastured poultry, small fruit production, and market garden. The cost is $25 per session or $100 for all six sessions, which includes materials, lunch, snacks, and a farm visit. Please make checks payable to " Alexander County." The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, in cooperation with the Caldwell
County Cooperative Extension will be offering a Pesticide Collection Day for residents in Caldwell,
Burke, Alexander, Catawba, and surrounding counties. The local site manager will
be Mrs. Eli Snyder, Agricultural Extension Agent for Caldwell County. The collection will be Thursday, March 21, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Caldwell County Public Library (back parking lot) at 120 Hospital Ave. NE, Lenoir NC 28645
Nearly all pesticide products will be accepted. For liquid pesticide containers larger than 5 gallons
or for unlabeled pesticides, please contact the Cooperative Extension Office for information before
bringing to the collection event. No gas cylinders are accepted at the event; however, assistance
information can be provided. Contact the Cooperative Extension Office for more information. Don't

Join other K-8 classroom and nonformal educators as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree K-8 Curriculum Guide. Every participant will leave the workshop with the PLT K-8 Activity Guide which includes 96 activities correlated to the NC Standard Course of Study and Essential Standards. The PLT activity guides are provided free of charge to participants through support from the NC Forestry Association. CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I in the EE Certification Program (K-8). This workshop is being held in partnership with STEMWest.
STEM Connections? Differentiated instruction? Literature links? The PLT activity guide covers it all!!! The PreK-8 guide is correlated to the Common Core (math and ELA) as well as to the NC Essential Standards (science and social studies). Participants will learn about the materials through direct engagement in the PLT activities throughout the workshop. More details will be sent prior to the workshop.
