Description: Pollinator Education Session


When: Saturday August 4, 2018- 10 am - 12 pm
Where: **NOTE: The first part of this class will be held at the Caldwell County Public Library (120 Hospital Ave NE, Lenoir, NC) and the second part will be at Unity Park and Community Gardens (1419 College Ave SW, Lenoir, NC). Participants will provide their own transportation between the library and garden.

Did you know that 75% of the world's food crops depend in part on pollinators? Join Caldwell Extension Master Gardeners and the Caldwell County Beekeepers' Association for an educational session all about pollinators, their importance, and what you can do to protect them.

The class will start with an indoor session in Room 2 at the Caldwell County Public Library at 10 am. Then at 11 am, participants will caravan to Unity Park and Community Gardens to see the newly established pollinator garden and learn about honeybees. Light refreshments will be served.

Books will be available for purchase

Join NC Cooperative Extension-Caldwell County Center,Patterson School Foundation, and the Caldwell County Public Library for a book signing and public lecture by author Georgann Eubanks. Georgann will be speaking about her new book, The Month of Their Ripening, which features heritage foods of North Carolina. Books will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow the lecture. Admission is free, and light refreshments will be served.

Georgann taught creative writing during the Caldwell Arts Council's Artists-in-the-Schools Program in the 1980's, and has taught Creative Writing for Duke University for many years. She and filmmaker Donna Campbell have also made a film documenting the work of sculptor Thomas Sayre.

The upcoming NC Egg Grading Class at N.C. Cooperative Extension- Caldwell County Center is a training class for people who have small flocks and sell eggs on a regular basis to consumers.

During the class we will be covering topics such as safe handling practices, interior and exterior egg quality, as well as laws and regulations surrounding egg grading and sales in North Carolina. There will be hands-on applications of techniques taught in the class so that participants can gain knowledge of how to grade eggs for sale in North Carolina.

If you are an egg producer who is producing more than 30 dozen eggs per week, are interested in expanding past this threshold, or are wanting to learn more about egg grading then this class is for you!

There is no fee for the class but prior registration is required to ensure an accurate headcount for lunch. Space is limited. Sign up today by calling 828-757-1290 or emailing tina_lovejoy@ncsu.edu.

Timber or landscape trees destroyed by recent fires, hurricanes or other storms are “casualty losses” that may allow the property owners to take a deduction on their federal income tax returns.
