2013 SUMMER EXPLORIN’

 

4-H Summer Explorin’ is a series of educational activities designed to make the most of summer vacation by teaching youth essential life-skills while having FUN!!

MAY/JUNE EVENTS

     

 

May 29                   DAY OF DRAMA                Ages 9 & up
Time: 9-4 p.m. Cost: $20                No Limit
Create it! Write it! Make it! Write a play, make puppets, paint a back-drop, and learn drama techniques and make-up. Instructors: 4-H staff & volunteers.

 

May 30                   HORSIN’ AROUND-1  Ages 5 & up
Time: 9-4 p.m. Cost: $40                Limit: 16
Team up with a partner and have a horse for the day! Learn all about horses! You will ride, groom and bathe a horse, clean his/her stall and maybe even go on a trail ride. We will also do a horse related craft. Location: Second Chance Ranch, 2697 Charlotte Lane, Lenoir.

June 1          KICK-OFF                Ages 5 & up
Time: 10-2 p.m.         Cost: Free              No Limit
Free Fun! Ride horses, make ice cream in a baggie, pitch a tent, plant in our 4-H garden, make a craft with the Library folks and visit with baby animals of the Alexander Co. Livestock Club.

June 3-5        HOOFIN’ IT              Ages 5 & up
Time: 9-4 p.m.           Cost: $90                No Limit

Enjoy Horsemanship, riding, bathing, grooming, trails, and even a show on Wednesday at 4 p.m. pick-up. Location: Second Chance Ranch, 2697 Charlotte Lane, Lenoir.

June 12                        ITS’ ELECTRIC! Ages 11 & up
Time: 1-3:30 p.m.       Cost: $10      Limit: 12
Learn about electric circuits, how to solder and build an electric project designed to show off your skills. Instructor: Zac Key, 4-H Sr. Youth

June 14         CHRISTMAS IN JUNE

Group 1-Ages 5-8; Group 2-Ages 9 & up

Time: 9-12 noon                Cost: $10      No Limit

You will make 3-5 crafts that are Christmas related. We encourage you to enter them in the fair in September. Crafts will include mugs for hot chocolate with a dipped spoon, jewelry, angels and lots more. Instructors: 4-H staff & volunteers.

JULY EVENTS

 

 

 

 

July 8-9                           CLOVERBUD CAMP            Ages 5-8
Time: 8:30-12:30 p.m.      Cost: $45.00             Limit: 25
We will go hiking, fishing, canoeing, make campfire snacks, ride horses, go creek stomping at the primitive camp of Anita Alta, 2929 Mulberry Creek Rd., Lenoir. Instructor: Christy McCurry and 4-H youth volunteers

July 8-12              JUNIOR CAMP                              Ages 9-13
Time: 9-4 p.m.                  Cost: $90                Limit: 10
Have the opportunity for hiking, fishing, canoeing, archery (taught by a shooting sports challenger), horseback riding, and much more! Instructors:  Lenny Rogers, Alexander Extension Director and Seth Nagy, Caldwell Extension Director

July 14-19     AWAY CAMP AT THE EASTERN 4-H CENTER

July 17-19         HORSE PLAY DAY CAMP                Ages 5 & Up
Time: 9-1:30 p.m.                        Cost: $65                Limit: 25
Our licensed Parelli Natural Horsemanship Trainer, Kristen Kirby will teach us about “keeping it natural” the Parelli way, based on the three principles of “Love, Language, and Leadership.” Learn about the games horses play and how to join in! Camp will be held at Whispering Wynd Farm in Sawmills. Bring lunch and snacks. Appropriate clothing is required to wear a helmet when on horseback.

July 18 & 19 ZOO SNOOZE                          Ages 9 & up
Time: 3 p.m. Thursday, return Friday afternoon
Cost: $45                                         Limit: 9
This wonderful opportunity includes the zoo admission on the following morning. The price is well worth it because youth have a chance to explore the zoo after hours. The kids sleep in the administrative offices at the zoo on a carpeted floor. Instructors: 4-H staff & volunteers.

AUGUST EVENTS

July 22-26            4-H20 CAMP                     Ages 9 & up
Time: 8-2 p.m.          Cost: $60                       Limit: 10
Learn about a career in aquatic and fisheries biology. Participants will learn about water and related environmental quality areas. You will be getting wet! Sessions will involve advanced water biology and testing skills, electrofishing, and advanced macro-invertebrate identification. On the last 2 days of the camp, campers will enjoy an overnight camping trip followed by a canoe trip on a nearby river. If you prefer only to participate in the day camping program, the cost will be only $30. Advanced canoeing skills are not required but the camp involves some strenuous activities. Transportation will be provided from the Extension Office to camp locations. Campers must provide a bag lunch and a drink for each day. Instructors: Lenny Rogers and Seth Nagy.

July 29-Aug. 2   4-H DISCOVERY DAY CAMP  Ages 9 & up
Time: 8-4 p.m.                 Cost: $100             Limit: 10
Come join youth from Alexander, Caldwell, Catawba and Iredell Counties for 5days of Discovery. Each day a different county hosts the daily activities with an educational and recreational activity. Instructors: 4-H staff & volunteers.

Monday,July 29thCatawba County Day – Riverbend Park for a Wildlife Program in the morning and Hickory Dickory Dock in the afternoon.

Tuesday, July 30th Iredell County Day – We will begin the day at 10:30 at Fort Dobbs Historical Site, where youth will learn the history of the Fort, enjoy a musket demonstration, march like revolutionary war soldiers, and other activities. Lunch will be a picnic at Lakewood Park, followed by bowling at Pla Mor Lanes. Shoes and a snack will be provided.

Hiddenite Emerald Mines and afternoon swimming at
Suncrest Water Park.

Thursday, August 1stCaldwell County Day Fort Defiance, a craft, and picnic in the morning, swimming at the Lenoir Aquatic Center in the afternoon. Features a giant water slide!

Friday, August 2ndDiscovery Place – Charlotte.

August 5-9        ARTS ALIVE!                       Ages 5 & up
Time: 9-5 p.m.     Cost: $90.00                        Limit: none
We are going to do all kinds of arts activities. We will make puppets, create music, learn about drama techniques, creative writing, crafts and photography. We will split into two groups: (ages 5-8 and ages 9 & up). Instructors: 4-H staff & volunteers.

August 12         HORSIN’ AROUND-2            Ages 5 & up
Time: 9-12 noon                        Cost: $30                Limit: none
Learn horsemanship, groom and bathe your horse for the day, learn patterns, feed and clean stalls – all these activities to learn about taking care of a horse. Location: Morning Glory Farm, 4912 Carpenter Rd., Granite Falls.

Time: 6-8:30 p.m.                     Cost: $30                    Limit: none
