UAV Application Protocols: Filing NOTAMs with the FAA

Notice to Airmen, also called a NOTAM, is required to be filed with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) between 24 to 72 hours before making an aerial application with a spray drone that weighs 55 pounds or more at the time of takeoff. These notices can be filed over the telephone at 1-877-487-6867 with the FAA. NOTAMs can also be filed electronically through "Flight Service".

To file NOTAMs through Flight Service, you need a user account and details about your FAA certification(s). However, once you are logged in, it can be easier to schedule and file notices. After logging in, select the "Plan & Brief" tab at the top of the page. Hovering over this tab will expand it to reveal options. Choose the "UAV NOTAM Form" option. This will take you to the page where you can file your NOTAM with the FAA. Additionally, this site offers many other services to airmen. Some of these services and options are dependent on your FAA licenses and certifications.

If you are making agricultural applications with a UAV that is 55 pounds or greater, your Certificate of Authorization (COA) requires you to file a NOTAM before making an application. Following the rules associated with aerial application is essential for this fledgling industry.
