Would you like to learn more about Gardening? Unity Park and Community Gardens and the Master Gardener℠ volunteers of Caldwell County offer this opportunity with First Saturday In the Garden.

These events are scheduled for the first Saturday of each month April–November 2021, from 8 to 11 a.m. We can guarantee that you will have fun, play in the dirt, learn something interesting, share gardening tips and meet your local gardeners!

We will begin the morning with some gardening maintenance. Filling beds, planting, mowing, weeding, and harvesting, there's always something to do in the garden!

Work starts at 8 a.m. with a break around 9:15 a.m. for a 15-to-30-minute educational session. First Saturday topics have included garlic harvesting, planting workshops, and August’s topic was focused on fall gardening and starting seeds indoors. Participants this month were sent home with their very own seed starting kits along with loads of resources pertaining to tips on starting seeds indoors and planting for pollinators.

The educational sessions are always followed by a tour of the pollinator garden. The pollinator garden tour includes native plants that participants could include in their very own landscape! You will learn what pollinator plants work best in certain conditions, where to purchase, what beneficial insects they attract, and more!

Our next First Saturday will be on September 4 with the topic of cover crops and how to incorporate them into home gardens. October’s topic will be ginger and sweet potato harvest. Participants will be sent home with some of whatever we harvest! The final First Saturday will be held on November 6. The topic will be pesticide safety- when, how, and what to use in your home garden.

First Saturdays are the perfect opportunity to meet your neighbors, learn about gardening, and fellowship with your community! Unity Park and Community Gardens (UPCG) is located at 1419 College Ave., SW, Lenoir NC.
