Winter Seed-Sowing Workshop

(Updated: Dec. 10, 2025, 6:46 a.m.)

For community members interested in gardening, Caldwell County Extension will host a Winter Seed-Sowing Workshop on Friday, January 23 from 2–4 p.m., held at the Caldwell County Center. The workshop introduces participants to an easy, low-cost method of germinating native perennial seeds outdoors during the winter months.

Winter sowing has become a popular approach for gardeners seeking to increase biodiversity and add more native species to their landscapes. The technique uses pots and natural freeze–thaw cycles to mimic winter conditions, resulting in hardy seedlings ready for spring planting.

Participants will receive a complete seed-sowing kit and may choose up to three types of native seeds to plant during the session. The workshop costs $5, which secures a participant’s spot and covers all materials. Registration can be completed by calling 828-757-1290 or emailing workshop coordinator Sarah Christas at sarah_christas@ncsu.edu.
